AOL is in their rights, they pay for the servers they up keep them and they OWN them, they can do whatever they want with them. on the same token im not goona poopoo Trillian for trying to circumvent there procedures. What trillian should do is implement an autoupdate feature which will allow them to push small updates down to their clients.

That guy is an idiot. I dont use Trillian, or AOL, but I think that whole deal is just more market manipulation. M$ has been doing it for years folks, nothing new. When you have a weak product, but you are a big company, you must use your resources to squash any competition, who may threaten your dominance. Its the new economy.

I like this part:

<< AOL said it's concerned that programs such as Trillian and the security gaps they exploit could lead to unwanted instant messages--spam--being sent to AOL members. >>

Yea, like they would notice. AOL users are already bombarded with massive amounts of spam on a daily basis, but of course that doesn't concern AOL because they are getting paid for it.

You say that like AOL charges for AIM. It is a free service that they maintain the network for. If Trillian wants to use it let them cough up half the money to run the network.

AOL openly published the TOC protocol...the problem is that they are hypocrites. It's ok for you to "invade" their network as long as you use the more limited protocol they tell you to use. But then they decide they don't care about supporting the developer community in anyway, so they don't bother updating or refining TOC.
So freelance developers want more functionality, so they figure out (read reverse-engineer) the OSCAR protocol and begin making their own clients.

If they'd just start updating TOC again, they'd have nothing to complain about.

But this guy in this article is a tart. Of course AOL has a right to throw whoever it wants off their network. But that doesn't make it "right" in a moral sense. That part is entirely subjective...

< ZDNet is suck. >
True enough.
David Coursey is a shill for Zdnet's largest advertisers - Microsoft, Intel, Compaq, Gateway, Dell, ad nauseum. Jerry Brest, the former columnist of the Anchor Desk, at least made an attempt to disguise his bias.

Are you saying that because Internet Explorer is free, M$ does not benefit by owning the Browser market? Think about it, if any IM program besides AIM or ICQ gets big, AOL's dummies might figure out they dont need AOL to use the internet. Its simple. They want thier users to be surrounded by AOL, so that they dont stray. One small stray can lead to more straying, and it could mean that AOL users might one day figure out they dont need AOL to chat, use IM programs, check email, stocks, or surf websites. Keeping their users sheltered is to thier benefit. Look at what is has done for Microsoft.

Yeh, ZDNet has always been suck
I think if AOL really though what trillian was doing was illigal, they would have brought up a suit a long time ago.

Have you tried it recently? They released a new version with a much improoved interface. You might want to give it a shot.

The newest versions of Trillian (v 0.72 and above IIRC) DO have autoupdate!

But Microsoft does not need to have any network running for IE to work where as AOL does have to have a network runnig for AIM to work.

I always love the occasional Trillian "hater"

Trillian is the one and only IM proggie i'll actually install (and use) on any of my machines. The others are a joke. Advertisements, Spyware, Security Holes ... you name it. Trillian's interface is absolutely spectacular, and easy to customize. Why the hell load 4 or 5 different IM clients when you can do it all in one easy little proggie? AOL's latest attempts to "thwart" Trillian users only further my disgust of the idiots. Just imagine what would happen if AOL got their hands on Red Hat, as rumored ...

AOL has the right to limit who accesses their own servers.

That said, I use trillian and will continue to do so until AOL figures out a way to completely block us.

I downloaded Trillian a while ago, but was only mildly impressed. The skin was kinda ugly and the connectivity was spotty. The latest version of Trillian is MUCH better, though. It looks cool and works like a charm.

That said, I'd have to agree that AOL's network is AOL's network, and they should have the final word on who has access and how people access it. Still, I like being able to use Trillian to connect to AIM, and will continue to do so, until AOL blocks Trillian once and for all, or the two parties come to some kind of mutual agreement.

So what if AOL released their protocol? Does this mean they cannot change their servers so only their AIM client can connect to them?

<< AOL's latest attempts to "thwart" Trillian users only further my disgust of the idiots. >>

You realize that you are using AOL's server when you send people Instant Messages through their network? If you don't like it, why don't you make your own instant message program?

Crybabies...
