What, if some company created a proprietary mail protocol, would everyone start whining that they can't use it?

<< Maybe we should all switch to Jabber. t's open and free, so there are NO hassles like this! >>

I don't see your point. Trillian is open and free. So this jabber client has no advantages over trillian, unless its endorsed by aol.

I would consider your post to be of the zealot nature.

Yes, Trillian is free (not open to my knowledge though). But AOL-protocols are not. And that is what causes these problems. Jabbers protocols are free and open, so there are no problems. Jabber is not just an IM-client, it's an IM-protocol as well.

Zealot?? For your information, I'm running Trillian myself, and I love it! But I acknowledge that it is vulnerable to things like this AOL-fiasco. With Jabber there is no such problems.

People want an IM-protocol that is interoperable and free as e-mail is. That is not the case right now, there are several systems that don't communicate with one another. With Jabber, that is not a problem. It is open and free, just like email is.

EDIT: typo

i don't see how anybody that knows what they're talking about can say this, it's almost exactly the same as aim...

People have many, many, many contacts on the aol network.
Switching over isn't a very viable option for them

Just like all thoes fast but useless sharing programs.

heh, so it would be OK for AOL to only allow e-mail to it's users be sent from other AOL accounts with the AOL specific protocol?

It would be A-OK for MS to only let it's site be viewable in IE, and purposefully block out any other browsers?

gimme a break. You made a program that has a use, but also has deficencies. This is just like the telco's requiring you to use only phones purchased from them. I'm all for AOL changing the protocol for whatever reason they see fit. But saying people using trillian are "hacking" into their network, when indeed all they are doing is using the network as-intended, just with a different GUI frontend.

Bah. Too bad it's impossible to get the idiot masses onto a IM client w/ an open network. That would solve all these problems. I'd be willing to donate some bandwidth for it, as would a hell of a lot of other larger ISP's. Bandwidth is getting cheap.

Yes they have many in ICQ, many in AIM, many in MSN, many in Yahoo... Switching to any IM would mean that you lose some of your contacts. If you plan to use only one, why not use one that is free and open. You wouldn't run in to these kinds of problems. And it does also support other IM-protocols as well, so if you had friends using some other IM, you could still use Jabber to communicate with them. Altrough Jabber too has problems with AIM (caused by AOL).

I don't know, I don't run Jabber (yet). There are several here.

You Trillian users are crybabies if you complain. AOL owns the network Trillian accesses. AOL wants to make money from the advertisments in AIM.

Why should AOL allow Trillian to use their network, without paying them? You hippies are brillaint, really.

I don't think so.

STATEMENT OF FCC CHAIRMAN WILLIAM E. KENNARD ON CONDITIONED APPROVAL OF AOL TIME WARNER MERGER

We require AOL to interoperate with competing instant messaging (IM) providers before it can offer videoconferencing and other streaming video over IM. This condition guards against AOL?s ability to leverage its existing dominance in current IM into the broadband IM marketplace.

So long as AOL keeps changing, so will Trillian. Let 'em play cat and mouse. Besides, anyone can get a DLL replacement to turn the ad area into a blank. I did that when I had AOL.

<< AOL is in their rights, they pay for the servers they up keep them and they OWN them, they can do whatever they want with them. on the same token im not goona poopoo Trillian for trying to circumvent there procedures. What trillian should do is implement an autoupdate feature which will allow them to push small updates down to their clients. >>

Exactly. And those ads in AOL IM are what keeps the service FREE!!!
