So i have received my second 2x16GB SR set and have done a full performance comparison between the different sets individually and mixed together for a dual rank setup (4x16GB), guess i can share the information ive learned by playing around with these for a few days now..

My main interest for this comparison were SR vs DR as i have seen little data on this so far.
Some keydata first:
  • All benchmark were run at a static CCD0-5000mhz / CCD1-5000mhz cpu clockspeeds
  • All the different memory configurations were maxed out on my system. (both timings and FCLK) (still looking for a better CPU)
  • All memory sticks in this comparison is Hynix m-die
  • Performance is compared in Aida, dram calc, linpack xtreme, Corona 1.3, Performancetest 10.2, OCCT, y-cruncher 2.5b and the XMR Monero miner
First off we have my EXPO set:
VENGEANCE® RGB 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 DRAM 6000MT/s C30 AMD EXPO Memory Kit

My rog crosshair x670e hero could not unlock this PMIC -> limited to 1435mv maximum.
Memory chips on these sticks seems to be the best binned as they could run the tightest timings at 1435mv, but since this is the limit they lose overall in ultimate performance.
Maximum SPD HUB temp after ~5hours karhu ram test @ 1425mv with two noctua 40mm fans blowing on them = 39 degrees with stock cooling.
Full performance screen:

Next we have my XMP set:
VENGEANCE® 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 DRAM 6600MHz C32 Memory Kit

Unlocked PMIC
1530mv needed to run these timings with stability intact .
1 hour karhu ram test @ 1530mv with two noctua 40mm fans blowing on them = 35 degrees with barts custom copper heatsinks
Performance screen:

Lastly dual rank 4x16GB (both sets mixed)

1435mv since locked PMIC
Could only run FCLK @ 2067mhz, and needed to increase VSOC to 1400mv to keep stability. (higher did not help)
Performance:

Conclusion:
These seem to be no performance benefit in running dual rank memory on this AM5 platform, atleast not with 4x16GB (which should be exactly the same as 2x32GB)
FCLK get stressed much harder with this memory amount and needed to be reduced to keep stability.
Ultimately my 2x16GB XMP set with unlocked PMIC performed the highest when totally maxed out, thanks to higher voltages allowed. I'm back to running this set solo again.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Can share some other settings/screenshots also since i'm already posting: (Better latency since not limited to static 5ghz anymore )
Highest Aida numbers i can put up: (unstable with GDM disabled)

Highest Aida with full stability in y-cruncher all stresstests enabled

Full stability-testing screen:

I took advantage of the Microcenter deal recently to upgrade from my aging i7 5820k. -$50 on Mobo ($150) and free 32 GB DDR5 6000 CL36. Man was my old CPU bottlenecking me bad. My frames are so much higher now. Also I'm undervolting and power limitting it without losing performance.

Free RAM made this deal too good even though I know Intel is ahead in gaming right now. Also Zen 5 3D Cache chips are coming in 2025 so that should be a good upgrade as I'll get a faster architecture and the 3D Cache benefits.

The board is really nice, don’t get me wrong, I’m pretty happy with it. One of the more premium feeling motherboards I’ve used and quite stable so far. MSI and Gigabyte are still struggling with sleep states too. I’m willing to give them some time.
that was my point. they're offering a premium feeling board but the software side is in shambles. this isn't new to asrock. they've been at this game for many years. they used to be good a long time ago, offering more features with the software to back it up.

So what's the consensus on AM5 ECC ram support? Am I understanding correctly that ECC support is being removed by AMD via AGESA updates and no AM5 motherboard will support ECC RAM in a few months time?

Complete unknown, though it seems unlikely to matter since so many AM4 boards that supported ECC RAM never actually enabled any of its features in firmware. You could use it, but it didn't do anything special/different from standard DRAM.

It would have been nice for AM5 to be an improvement over AM4 in that regard.

Maybe the Threadripper Pro sales are so slow that they feel compelled to do artificial segmentation à la Intel. No ECC on consumer platform means users are forced to go TR Pro. One other reason could be, they think the on-chip ECC on DDR5 is good enough for most users.

The platform costs for TR Pro are so insanely high you can't really upsell someone from AM5 even, since the cheapest CPU is $1700 and the motherboards are like $900+?

I would assume they found a bug in their ECC code and chose to disable the feature until it can be fixed.

I believe Asrockrack AM4 MBs has working firmware (for ECC). Of course those are pretty expensive. I have used these (and X470D4U2-2T versions)

ASRock Rack > X470D4U

Also B550 & X570 based are available but those are *really* expensive.

True, not all AM4 motherboards supported ECC ram, but a lot of them did. ECC is important to me so I got motherboard that had ECC support. It would be a major bummer if AM5 cannot support ECC at all.

That's only in place to keep DDR5 as reliable as DDR4. It won't detect and report multi-bit errors.
And they should have kept it hidden from spec sheets because dozens of listings now say they're selling DDR5 ECC. But the module only has 8 memory chips... lol

Can share some interesting news from my latest testing
(will post short version here)

At each memory speed there is a bugged FCLK strap that gives real 50MT/s higher memory speed
(6000/2033, 6200/2100 and 6400/2167)

6000MT/s, 2033mhz FCLK: (bugged FCLK speed at this memory strap = 50MT/s higher memory speed)

6000MT/s, 2200mhz FCLK:

6200MT/s, 2100mhz FCLK: (bugged FCLK speed at this memory strap = 50MT/s higher memory speed)

6200MT/s, 2200mhz FCLK:

6400MT/s, 2100mhz FCLK: (needed to relax the timings alittle)

6400MT/s, 2166mhz FCLK: Could not boot into windows at this 6450MT/s speed

6400MT/s, 2200mhz FCLK (suspect SOC is maybe throttling here)

Results / conclusion: (all latency numbers above were ran at 6000mhz cpu clockspeed)
  • At 6000/2033, 6200/2100 and 6400/2167 there is a bug with the memory/FCLK speed that gives real + 50MT/s memory speed.
  • Between 6200MT/s and 6400MT/s there are some hidden memory training changes (together with +2cas bump) that results in ~2.5ns higher latency.
I have found myself some new 24/7 settings at the 6200/2100 strap.

Good for us if Raphael prices are coming down. Perhaps Raphael-X prices will take over the old price slots held by Raphael at launch?
Don't know if they are permanent. Seems to be linked to double 11 promotion. And not sure if the cuts will be extended to the rest of the world. But I guess there is hope for both.

Great news for those with ASRock motherboards who love S3 sleep.
There is a beta BIOS (1.11.AS03 [Beta] for my motherboard) which allows XMP/EXPO and keeps S3 sleep states available.
My biggest gripe so far is fixed.

Good to hear!
Still AGESA ComboAM5 1.0.0.3a?
