True idle being better would be nice but if I want true idle my machine is powered off... so my typical usage looks more like this versus having the flagship CPU from the competitor:

I think if Your PC is not idling most of the time, it means it is either for gaming ( in that case the flagship from other vendor is okay in power use ) or is running some sort of throughput load non stop ( in this case You've bought wrong CPU, as 7950x would work better in peak perf and perf/watt).
The reality is that for most of the users PCs are idling most of the time or the load is very light ( like watching some video ).

What is completely wrong tho is incompetent AMD engineers and their buggy chips. There is no reason for package C6 to be bugged and there is no excuse for idle power consumption to increase with each newer AGESA. They were forced to disable some DF power states, is what i've heard online. That means ~ +5W at idle going from 1.04 to 1.05 AGESA on this system. Quite an impact when whole 12/13th gen Intel's chip idles for less.
Sure their intentions might be good - working around some bugs in silicon by disabling power states, but that does not make them less incompetent.

idle power usage was set to go down due to the ciod being fabbed and partly designed by tsmc with amd engineers. this hasn't been the case the entire time. it'll be interesting to see what idles are like on team blue.

@Markfw how is your 7950xxx system coming along? It dawned on me today what the xlr 8 meant on the pony card boxes.

So only in asus x670e extreme/hero gigabyte x670e extreme/master and msi x670e ace have the dp usb type c right @A/// ?

And for the ram 6000 or 6400?
yes per my understanding in the tech specs section of a board it should say the following where the graphics column is singled out.

USB4® ports support USB Type-C® display outputs*

you may be asking yourself why this is and it's been a slow trend of moving good useful features higher and higher the price pyramid. it is the unfortunate part of doing buisness. as board design has become complicated due to signaling the standard features of a high end that used to cost low 300s max now costs several times that.

Extremes afaik are eatx from any brand. i'd check build quality, sound chip and networking chip. value for money at the 600+ ragnge.

I have 5 of them(one is a 7950x3d), and they have been working great.

Wouldn't this be a case where you simply bought a lower tier motherboard and a PCIe expansion card, if it really is that important?

nah the mobo needs to be able to use the card and have an active connector header on it. you can't smack that card into a case with a 90 buck board.

Memory Context Restore with Expo still doesn't work properly on the latest bios. It seemed to work for the first few boots, then was locking up on POST and only started working again after a cmos reset. I'll just leave it off, I normally put the PC on sleep anyway and only reboot for windows updates, and will take the longer boot time over instability.

That doesn't sound too good.

what does memory context restore do? I've seen it thrown around lately on complaint threads but can't figure out what it does outside of a cursory google search. is it a secondary user editable rom to store multiple ram profiles?

Tired, last night was gaming night and I have to get up at 5 am. So less than 5 hours of sleep.
You seem to have an understanding wife.

It's for impatient people that want to shave time off of cold boots in lieu of system stability.
kind of like fast boot on windows that's not a true cold boot? what is it retraining the memory for? Is this a feature on Intel's 700 chipset or an am5 thing?
