If that was the case, then Zen 4 should show the same behavior, but it’s unique to Zen 5.
Maybe it didn't work like that with Z4, but some very loud people complained about how multi-ccd cpus are consuming 30-40W of power in idle, so AMD obliged and modified power-saving algos with this huge latency increase as a side effect. Maybe the reviewers can re-test the latencies (or our resident Zen5 owners like Dom) with JEDEC / XMP enabled and some specific IF power-related settings like DF Cstates off in the CBS

Zen 5 doesn’t improve idle power.

With all of these mixed results, I think I'm going to hold out for the userbenchmark review before making any decision.
At least with User Benchmark you know the results before you read.

Marketing knows what they are doing they fudge the numbers just enough so that can't be taken to court over it. i'm sure legal reviews this stuff before it gets sent out lol.
And what good did that do them? Everyone who looked at the slides is now confused and disappointed. And they're not selling anything lol

Is it just me or are the reviews turning out actually worse than expected? I mean, last week CPUs were underwhelming even toward the rather mild expectations, but it was kind of assumed its down to the strict TDP limit. That being no issue with dual-chiplet CPUs i thought they would at very least perform in line with the AMD marketing slides, but its more of 9700x situation anyway?

I think people expected that the PPT would be the same as the 7950x, but it was reduced to 200 W, so effectively the same as the reduced TDP of the 9700x. Additionally, AMD implemented this new driver for dual CCD products with core parking on the non-active CCD, which seems to have caused some issues in either not always working correctly or maybe some reviewers not having it installed correctly.

AMD's job to ensure that their driver doesn't get installed incorrectly or malfunctions enough to mess with CPU performance.

I mean, they can't force a reviewer to do it or do it the right way, but it is their fault for springing something like this on reviewers so close to release. Hopefully AMD gets everything ironed out and communicated clearly in time for the X3D release.

There would've been an easy to fix to get better reviews: 8-core Ryzen 5, 12-core Ryzen 7, and just the lower Ryzen 9 with 16 cores. And announce a cheap 6-core Ryzen 3. Also, keep everyone waiting for what might fill the 9950X spot.

I'm having a hard time understanding why the performance is next level in Linux while being underwhelming in windows...

Part of the reason (but not all) is that the Phoronix tests include a lot of production type tests where compilation times, web hosting, DB performance, physics simulations, etc. make up most of the test suite. This types of load seem to be where Zen 5 does really well in general. Windows testers tend to focus primarily on gaming and Cinebench / Blender, where Zen 5 shows a poor to mediocre improvement (at least given the lower power cap for Cinebench / Blender). There are still unexplained performance uplifts seen in Linux that aren't showing up in Windows, but as far as general performance results go, the focus on types of applications is a big part of it.

I think it's why AMD extended the review embargo. They tried to fix these inconsistencies in performance, failed spectacularly and in the end, had no choice but to lift the embargo as promised. I bet there are people/teams there having a very bad few days/weeks ahead until the problems get sorted out.

Yeah, to me it really feels like RDNA 3 redux. AMD thinking that they can unlock performance in the drivers and then being unable to.

Hopefully this time they will be manage to get it done with an AGESA update.

This is the first time I haven't bought a new flagship cpu on launch day in probably 15 years. I am trying to convince myself there is something redeeming about the 9950x, but this is ridiculous. I don't think x3d will even save AMD this time. How can be be any faster than current x3d chips if it is based off the 9000 series which is no better than the 7000 series in games?

Let me get this straight, does the core parking driver thing turn off the other CCD when gaming, or does it just force the game to run on only the first CCD? Because I typically run lots of stuff, even when gaming, and I want 16 cores for a reason, the first of those alternatives are a big no for me.
