OK, only CPU change on a Genoa build, but due to budget, thats first. The CPU (an ES) was not cheap. Stuck at 4800 on memory, but at least I have 12 channels. The final with be DDR5 ECC registered 6000.

So I decided to see if supermicro would support this, and they were very helpful on the phone. I sent them an email with all of my information and decided to wait for a reply before I tried it, as they even said they would send me a beta bios if its required ! flashing before I replace the Genoa with the Turin will be a LOT easier. Got to love supermicro support !!!!

From the pre-release rumors, the Turin Zen5 Gen anyway will go to 500W. I think all the Zen4 gen epyc boards only go to 400W. And I know mine MB vrms at 400W get toasty, so I think that SM might be coming out with a new / heavy duty MB to support Zen5? And like the others?

We shall see!

One of the only 2 Turin 64 core CPUs is 360, the other is 300. Its only the 160/192 core that are supposed to be 500 watt. Source:

Of course that could be wrong. But from the looks of it. The 64 core is 360 watt max, and could be 400 if they are wrong.

Mine is this one
  • 100-000001247-12 - 8 CCD + 1 IOD (64 Zen 5 Cores / 128 Threads / 256 MB Cache)

Thanks Mark for the update!

I don't know why any motherboard maker would want to allow for a previous server cpu on last gen motherboards. How will they encourage to sell more? Server boards don't turn over much.

My SM Zen4 motherboard does not handle over stock cpu WATT use over stock well! VRMS get HOT! Even with great airflow.

I think we will see new boards from all vendors for Zen5. Many epyc Zen5 chips will use more chiplets to the mix along with the faster EEC ram will burn many more watts...

We shall see.

The seller can't tell you which mobo he checked this CPU to be working in?
it came from a corporate environment. He has no idea what system it was used in. Supermicro had this to say officially.

"Per our AMD team, Turin CPU hasn’t officially launched yet.

We will have Turin systems ready when AMD officially launches the Turin CPU."

So they will not even tell me if it will work on my motherboard. I am going to fire it up anyway when I get time.

Before you do that, make a visual note of the pins underneath the Turin and that of an existing Genoa chip. If they look too different, better not try. The wrong pin getting voltage, for example, could fry something in the CPU.

AMD will once again be using their socket SP5 platform for Turin processors, which means the chips are drop-in compatible with EPYC 9004 Genoa (and Bergamo).Jun 3, 2024

Not sure the link, but it was the results of the google search.

I will try later this week.

OK, preliminary word is that Turin will be announced Oct 10th, 2024. If that happens I may have it up and running the same day if I get bios from supermicro.
