They have to pick a transition point somewhere and they delayed it just now.

I wouldn't be so sure. AM4 is still supported. AMD may take a lesson from the AM4 to AM5 transition and launch "AM6" as a speciality platform first before positioning, pricing and marketing it as more mainstream and a AM4/AM5 replacement only later.

Perhaps Zen 6 will feature Eliyan interconnect technology between chiplets. It sounds like they've been able to reach close to an inch of reach at a conservative 2.5Tbps/mm, while skipping an interposer layer. Its based on AQLink Bidirectional links. Suddenly chiplets become simpler. It was prototyped in 2022.

I mentioned this in the other thread, but I assume it's like AM4... they will release new AM5 SKUs long after the main product line has gone to AM6.

I would personally expect DDR6 in 2027 at the latest, but they are still bringing out AM4 CPUs today, so perhaps they count that as support for AM5.

Even if Zen6 will be a "tock" I think it is not already doomed from the start: there could be a lot of low hanging fruits that can be addressed (many of these basically needed a new packaging). Examples would be to increase bandwidth and to lower latency between the I/O die and the CCDs, as well as to improve the inter-CCD communication.

I mean, we're in the middle of 2024 already, it makes perfect sense to me that DDR6 or whatever replaces DDR5 for desktop will not be ready at decent prices mass produced in 22 months from now. DDR5 just recently got down to sensible prices. I'm no leaker or analyst, but Z6 seems extremely likely to keep the 8c CCD's and DDR5. We can at least hope for 3nm I guess.

Are things slowing down now with increasing cost on leading nodes? Intel dropping SMT and rumored to not have a huge IPC increase on desktop either may seems to suggest so..

Not exactly! The usual hype suspect said it's not a big IPC generation. So the Zen 6 hype train is pretty chill so far.

You forgot SMT6 and reverse SMT6, which combines 6 physical cores into one mega ultra Chungus core that has 66% more IPC and 66% more power consumption.

The only way to cool this devilish beast of a CPU is to use water cooling with Holy water.
