Thread to focus on Zen4 3D cache CPUs.

New gaming king (as most expected), though the 2 CCD 7950x3d does seem to have issues with some games, more than I would expect of it getting stuck on the "wrong" CCD. I imagine it will get cleared up with subsequent updates but we'll see. Simulated 7800X3D showed no such issues and overall has the gaming lead (real product might be slightly slower though depending on in game clocks).

Computerbase also has the 7950x3d as the gaming champ. They (and TPU) also show that efficiency while gaming is extremely good.

Just to toot my own horn a little, it landed spot on with my prediction of fastest gaming CPU but not significantly so over a 13900k on average, but with much higher efficiency.

Additional reviews, will add more later.

Interesting test piting a 5800X3D gainst a Zen 1 1700 using a RX5700XT GPU and looking at the frametimes difference.

Result is that even with a low end card there s a big benefit to go X3D.

A 5700 XT is a low end card these days?

Idk... I wish they had used a 5800X chip to compare against.

Comparing a OG Zen against a Zen 3 CPU v-cache or not would be expected to show better frame times. You could do the same with Intel CPUs across different generations and see that newer CPUs deliver better frame times.

RnR is right, they should have had a 5800X included to see the real difference that doesn't exist as a result of generational improvements.

There s more people who would be prone to upgrade a 1700/2700, whoever has a 5800X is unlikely to upgrade the CPU to a 5800X3D without upgrading the GPU.

Another new bios for MSI today. This one puts VDDCR_SOC at 1.3V by default with Expo on, down from 1.35V with the last bios. The idle power use is also 5-10W lower.

In general with the last few bioses, the board gets stuck on POST 50% of the time with a vram red light if rebooting, even with memory context restore off. I don't think it was doing this before. Doing a cold boot fixes it. It's annoying but I don't need to reboot very often. The whole AM5 platform feels janky compared to my old Z490 which was rock solid, and reminds me of the 939 nforce4 days.

That's not an issue, but making claims about v-cache based on frame time data isn't useful because it's not isolating the impact of just the v-cache. You'd need to run a 5800X and a 5800X3D at locked clock speeds to determine what the actual difference is.

Try disabling "Power Down" in the Advanced DRAM configuration.

World of Tanks is from the makers of Warships, correct? I'm not surprised at the great leap in performance. I'd like to see it against a 13th gen but given the computational mathematics in those games the x3d should win it out with ease and elegance.

I actually thing it favors intel and nvidia, but it shows that some games are CPU bound by a 9 years old overclocked processor even at 5120x1440.

Still running into this issue. Reboots fail at least 50% of the time with the CPU/VRAM lights stuck on, while cold boots are much more likely to work (but not 100% either). I think one of the MSI BIOS updates may have broke something, as I don't recall having this issue when I first got the setup.

I'm having a separate issue where Windows suddenly requires a logon on wake from sleep (I have always set it up to not do this) and the sound card output is full of pops, which was never happening before. Maybe one of the recent windows updates changed something. Toggling the sound card driver on and off fixes it and hibernating instead of sleeping also avoids it but requires POST, which frequently fails.

Actually a cmos reset fixed several of these issues. It had something to do with the onboard audio being partly enabled (windows could see it as a device) even though it was disabled in the BIOS. Somehow the BIOS config on this board just breaks itself after a while and develops strange issues (possibly after a BIOS update), I have seen it more than once now. This board lacks the cmos reset button and it's really clumsy to put the reset jumper in place without removing PCIE cards.

I still get the failed boots but they are a lot less frequent now, at least at the moment.

I thought modern boards are supposed to do it automatically. My last few all seemed to do it and needed all the settings entered manually again.

I bought a 3 pack of little push buttons and installed one on the CMOS reset jumper. I simply ran it out the back of the case. Much easier!

My b650 edge always resets the BIOS when it gets updated.

Decided to do some benchmark comparisons between my system and a reviewer's system with similar specs. I wanted an apples-to-apples comparison to see where my system stacks up. TechSpot reviewed the 7950X3D with an RTX 4090. The list of games they tested also noted the settings they used. I was able to use the same settings in three of those games: Cyberpunk 2077, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider. The OS I'm on is Windows 11 22H2.

My system is moderately overclocked while theirs is not. My 7950X3D is using a BCLK increase of 102MHz with PBO while my memory is running at 6200 with tweaked timings. These are my settings output from the BIOS:

My 4090 is an MSI Gaming Trio with the 520W MSI Suprim X BIOS. My everyday overclocks on the 4090 average the following (boost clocks shown):

First up I ran Cyberpunk 2077 with the same settings as TechSpot. 1920x1080 with the Ultra Preset as the base then turning DLSS and FidelityFX off.

TechSpot results:

Horizon Zero Dawn at 1920x1080 with the Favor Quality Preset.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider at 1920x1080 Highest preset with DLSS and FidelityFX off.

Wanted to see how my PC performed today compared to a year and 1/2 ago.

Key differences:

MSI 4090 replaced with Gigabyte Waterforce 4090. Same core clock speed. +1600 on memory compared to +1100. 600W max power compared to 520W. Runs cooler.

High frequency CCD turned off with other BIOS changes:
BCLK1 Frequency [102.0000]
BCLK2 Frequency [106.0000]
Memory Frequency [DDR5-6120MHz]
FCLK Frequency [2100 MHz]
Tcl [28]
Trcd [36]
Trp [36]
Tras [28]

Windows 11 23H2 with the Ryzen performance fix.

Horizon Zero Dawn

Tomb Raider

Cyberpunk 2077 with Phantom Liberty update. It's not exactly apples to apples with this update. Settings are the same though.
