I want to set up a 6 disk RAIDZ2 in NAS4Free. In an effort to save money, I was going to repurpose some old 512k sector drives in this new array. If I mix the 2x512k sector drives with 4x advanced format drives in one vdev, will my performance hit be drastic? If it will be drastic, how much are we talking? And when I do resliver new WD Reds into the vdev, will the array perform as well as it would have if I had just had 6x2TB WD Reds today?
I need to know before I start to rsync 2TB of data to the zpool.
Old drives: Samsung EcoGreen F2 1TB (HD103SI, 512k sectors)
New drives: WD Red 2 TB
My plan was to resliver 2x 2 TB WD Reds into the vdev when one of the Samsungs starts spitting bad sectors or when 2 TB WD Reds hit ~$75. I want to keep my average per-drive costs to $100 or less.
