A few questions:

#1 - Why, if Best Buy sells these drives, are they not listed on bestbuy.com anywhere?

#2 - Does anyone know if the stock for items ordered at CompUSA.com is different than local store stocks? I checked their website on Dec. 31 at about 1:00 pm Pacific Time and they were no longer allowing online purchasing for it.

I'm just sort of confused overall. I called my local Best Buy and since they didn't have any of this drive they obviously didn't have a price for it, so I asked if they could give me a price match raincheck and they said no...

What should I do? I really need this burner and I don't have the money to buy a more expensive one.

Accidental double post....I figured it's better to replace it with this than the same message!

I called a Compusa CSR today and was led to believe 2 things:

If I called back tomorrow I could somehow get a drive on backorder for 129.99

and

The drives are on sale all week.

I'm heading out to the BB in Humble (Houston, TX) tomorrow and see what I can pick up.

I find it strange why these zipcd drives are selling so cheap everywhere. Makes you wonder if they know about something wrong with them, as why else would it be so low for such a new drive?

Sometimes you can get other retailers (Office Depot for example) to pricematch Best Buy.

hmmm I have tried every BB in Southern California and they are all going for $279 ($249 after MIR). And the odd thing is, most of the stores are out of stock on the drives.

Thats not right, no California love.

I tried to get a rain check at BB in Indianapolis and they had the drive listed at 280.00. I even talked to the manager and they had heard nothing about a sale on these.

No luck at Best Buy. The Compusa csr I talked to yesterday was an idiot. When I called back today I was practically laughed at .

Did anyone have any luck finding out if Best Buy would be recieving more in stock this week? Are the drives discontinued or something? What made the price so low?

as a general rule, BB employee's aren't supposed to give out rainchecks on non-advertised items. period. if you manage to get one, more power to ya, but just an fyi. also, if there's no comp-usa's in your area, then the price will more than likely be $280 or whatever-it-was. and the 129.97 means it's a market-reaction (that will probably stop at the end of the week). if you live in a compusa market and the signs(or stickers) are for the higher price, then get an employee to price-check one for ya.

KajinX

P.S. Be kind to your local BB employees, they get paid low-$$$ and no commision to put up with a lot of $hit (from customers, managers, or sometimes both). The managers on the other hand...

well there is a CommpUSA literally 50 feet from the Best Buy in my area, so I don't think thats the problem. Do you guys think if I told them to check prices at BB's in other areas that do have the drive for $129, they would match it?

It just doesn't seem right that random BB's have an item for 60% less than another BB.

Well I went yesterday, CompUSA had been sold out for days and Best Buy had 2 left @249.99 before rebate, they are about a mile away from eachother. Oh well...

As a former BB employee, I shall attempt to clear up some of the confusion

1. Best Buy has teams of individuals who run around finding out what the other stores are going to have for sales. Once they find this information, it is distibuted to the stores that are local to the sales. They have an automated signing process, where the signs are printed out at each Best Buy. The merchandising teams are responsible for distributing these signs throughout the store. It is possible that some of these stores did not get their signs and therefore no one knew about the pricematch. I talked to a former co-worker, and he said that they had not recieved any "email" regarding this pricematch. You can tell that it is a pricematch, and not a sale price because it is signed @ 129.97. The 97 cents, as opposed to 99 cents, tells you that it is not a regular price or sales prices. Also, if you ever see a product listed with 50 or 70 cents at the end, then this is a closeout item and the store will not be carrying any more of that item.

2. Regarding rainchecks, the proper procedure is to only issue rainchecks for items that are in the sales flier, and only if there is not a "no rainchecks" disclaimer. It would be ludicrous for a store to offer rainchecks on anything in the store. They are not there as a mail-order business. If someone got a raincheck, then it was either from an incompetent employee, or it was because they talked to/badgered a manager, and manager's don't have a clue; their job is to make the customer happy. Most of them will do just that, rather than what is company policy.

3. As far as why the price is so cheap, keep in mind this is a price war. CompUSA had a special sale, with $150 off instantly from several products Sunday and Monday only; if they're still offering it now, it's probably because Best Buy kicked it up a notch and decided to offer it for the week. If you're worried about the quality of the drive, then keep in mind that it appears to be a plextor drive; plextor makes some of the best cd/dvd/cdrw drives on the market. If that doesn't convince you, then I'd suggest getting the drive @ Best Buy and investing the $30 in a 3 year service plan.. that way if the drive breaks down, you can bring it back to BB for a replacement. And 3 years is a loooooong time.

4. As far as the Best Buy website is concerned, don't be too surprised if you find something in the store that's not on the website. The site is fairly new, so they sometimes are a little slow updating it, and other times a product will come an go before they have a chance to put it up. It's highly possible that the drive is on some sort of clearance, but I think it was more of a "New Years Deal" pricematch-gone-out-of-hand sorta thing. Also, you'll often find product on the website that is not found in any store. This is part of BB's attempt to broaden the product line that they have available and push for more internet shoppers. This will help relieve a lot of the strain on the stores as well as increase revenues.

Hope that helped a little

I have rainchecks for several items at BB (including the 12x10x32!), but I was told that until I get the postcard they mail to you, I can't use it, even if I have my customer copy (the top one). Has anyone tried to use his copy of the raincheck at BB without the card? FoolGuy, what do you know about it?
