mini,

You should be able to because the SCSI is less cpu dependent, the IDE more. So, two burners, one being IDE and the other being SCSI would be perfectly fine. I would try using DiscJuggler, the "Tower Edition" I think. It supports from one upto an unlimited amount of recorders depending on how much you pay to register it.

The rebate form I found at Iomega's website says it has to be purchased after Jan 1, 2001. So I can't get the rebate if I purchase it before Monday?

I'm afraid that by Monday there won't be anymore left.

Or is there another rebate form somewhere else?

This deal looks great, but does anyone know how good a burner this is? Also, how good is Iomega at updating drivers and other needed stuff?

LivinLaVivaPollo: with a $15 promise Utra66 PCI controller, IDE works just as good as SCSI in terms of cd-rom and cd-writer performance. CompGeeks and other places sell these cheap.... and way cheaper.

Definitely not always a true statement, esp. if you wish to multi-task (ie. use your computer for other things while 'burning). SCSI still rules ...

I would be truly impressed to see an IDE setup be able to burn two separate disks from two separate readers at 8x on the fly like I can do with my SCSI Plextors...at least without burnproof.

...but I am sure you probably paid more than $99 for those
pretty 8x SCSI Plextors.

Plextor is THE drive to have and SCSI is the way to go, but
$99 for a 12x10x32x drive with BurnProof is not a bad deal
for us poor folk...

I know when I bought an item pre-sales at BestBuy, and took it back for the price match, they gave me an updated receipt with the date I did the price match. If CompUSA does the same, buy it early and take it back on Jan 1 (they are open I assume) and do the price match. Question: I thought CompUSA charges a restocking fee. If this deal turns out to be a false alarm, I don't want to be faced with a charge to return the thing. Anybody know for sure?

Actually, I think the restocking only applies if you open the product. Otherwise, it's their standard 14 policy

So, would it be better to go and pick it up between now and Sunday,
not open it, then return on Monday (to be sure the $30 rebate
coupon at the Iomega site was valid) and have them pricematch?

I live about 1.5 hours from the nearest CompUSA, so I'd be spending
a lot of money on gas driving there twice. Maybe I should just set
the alarm real early on Sunday and break out the thermal underwear...

Now, what do I tell my wife? If she finds out I'm going after one
of these drives, she's gonna chew me a new...well...you know...

Just picked one up at my local CompUSA for $279.99. The shelves were completely stocked. Assuming this deal comes through AND they'll come through with a price guarantee come Sunday 12/31, this deal will be the bees knees.

Also, 2 things:

1. The rebate for this drive is NOT for a post-1/1/2001 purchase as some have indicated. Here is the text straight off the Iomega site at http://www.iomega.com/promos/promos.html:

"Iomega ® CD-RW 12x10x32x $30 Mail-in Savings. Purchase an Iomega CD-RW 12x10x32x Internal Drive between November 19, 2000 and December 31, 2000 and qualify for a $30 savings. Click here for the details."

2. The 15% restock fee applies after 2 weeks only if the box has been opened, so if you pick one up now, I highly advise not opening the thing until the Sunday paper arrives and the deal is confirmed.

I grabbed one at my CompUsa for the $279.00, the return policy is no restocking fee for unopened items, so I won't unseal the bag they put them it.

They had quite a few units.

he said "Hey by the way, how did u find out?"
I said "excuse me? about what?"
"about the 150 dollars off on the 31st, we werent supposed to tell anybody"

I just smiled and thought about my anandtech friends, and walked off.
