I went to my CompUSA this evening. No one in the store said that they knew anything about it-not even the manager. Guess I will be there Sunday morning. I'll go by late tomorrow evening to make sure they still have some left. I talked to one guy at the service desk who said "the info on it is probably in that box(pointing to an orange FedEx shipped box on the floor behind the counter with CompUSA all over it)over there. We aren't allowed to open it until Sunday morning. That's where all of the specials and rebate notices are." Actually, I believe him. Most stores probably open it when they get it.

I went to the local CompUSA store just now after work. They didn't have *any* ZipCD 12x10x32 on the shelf at all. I asked a sales person and he said it's the one that's going on sale on Sunday but right now it's selling for $279 and do I *really* want to buy it. I said yes. Then he said if you don't see it on the shelf, that means it's probably sold out. Then I went to Customer Service desk and told them I checked your website and there should still be some in stock. It's only then that they went to a cage, to a big box where they're hiding all the stock, and gave one to me. I don't know why they would hide all the stock? To the store itself, what's the difference between selling everything today vs. selling them on Sunday?

Do any of you guys know if CompUSA will limit the number of in-store $150 instant rebates per customer? I want to get 10, but if they only allow one per customer, I don't want to have to deal with the post Christmas return lines and return 9 of them.

Also, is this drive a SCSI? It doesn't list it in the item desciption anywhere so I'm figuring its probably an EIDE. I have a Plextor Plexwriter 12x10x32 I just got 2 weeks ago from Onvia, so if this deal falls through I'm just gonna return it and use the Iomega. Its better right?

Thanks

Doc, that's common practice actually - hiding stock. This way they can place 10 on the shelf during the sale and say "that's all we had, it was limited stock". Then after the sale they place them back on the shelf.

It's a simple sales technique, use great deals like this to bring people to the store. Hopefully, when the "limited stock items" are all "sold out", then you may purchase something else-since you are there already...

CompUSA has used this "sales technique" MANY times. Sometimes they get really tricky and place on the ad itself a disclaimer that says--"10 per store". Best Buy has used this technique also, so it's not that uncommon...

If this prepurchase deal worries anyone, then MAKE SURE you leave the box in perfect condition. That way if you get the shaft on the sale price and have to return it, they have less to argue about (open-box, used-item, box-not-fit-for-display, all those common return arguments)

Good Luck

They are basically the same drive with the same exact capabilities. Lets see... Iomega for 99, Plextor for ... more than that.

Sounds like you are trying to justify your more expensive Plextor purchase! I just bought the TDK VeloCD equivalent to this for 160. I thought that was a great deal.

Whoooa.....after digging a little deeper, I found that the size of the Buffer is 1.8 MB. Now comes the obvious question. Is it better to have a Burnproof Drive with 1.8 Mb of buffer or a non-burnproof drive with 4 MB?

I have the burnproof TDK and there was nothing that I could do to make coaster. Whenever the buffer runs low, it just suspends recording briefly until the buffer fills.

I would take the smaller buffer with burnproof over larger without it. Especially with an IDE drive where it is not that difficult to get a buffer underrun... even with a 4MB buffer.

If I buy a zip cd tomorrow (sat) could I take it to a different compusa on sunday to get the price reduction? I ask because unfortunately I have to work tomorrow and there is a compusa right across the street so I could get one there, but I don't want to drive all the way back out to my office on sunday.

Dude, just take it to the same one for the price reduction.

Any CompUSA nationwide will do the price adjustment.

So far ALL the Burn-Proof drives(Sanyo, Plex, TDK, etc) have been designed around a 2mb buffer.

With Burn-Proof the size of the buffer no longer plays such a huge role as it used too. With Burn-Proof the laser turns off when a low data buffer condition is detected, then turns back on when the buffer fills with data again. I bet with Burn-Proof you could easily get by with only 1mb.

Many of the Websites testing these Burn-Proof drives are testing it with 4 or more programs running, including games. So far i have yet to read a review that said they were able to create a buffer error.

The Early Sunday Edition paper comes out Saturday here in Dallas with all the Ads. We will see. My local CompUSA had about 15 of these on the shelf and only a few drives of anything else on the shelves though.

Just picked up two in Long Beach, CA. The employee I spoke with didn't know of the deal, but got a crazy look in his eye like he was going to jump on it himself. $606.18 later.. (ouch!) They seemed to have about 12 left on the shelf.

I'd love to play with one of them, but methinks I'll wait until the deal is official.

For those who don't know all the specs, it boasts 20x DAE. Not bad for an IDE drive, but doesn't come close to my UltraPlex40 (40x DAE).

17x DAE is pretty decent...Although DAE rate on a burner isn't really
that critical...DAE rate is more important for the drive you're using
as a SOURCE drive for the burner in CD copies...

This drive is a Plextor... Plextor 12x10x32

This drive is the Iomega..(Netscape does not like this link, use IE)... Iomega 12x10x32

Here is another link to the Iomega pictures just incase... Iomega Package contents

Well they LOOK exactly the same to me (except for the decals). I doubt this is an accident...

Ohhh, the Iomega 12x4x32 that drive is a rebadged-> Sanyo CRD-BP900P, it also has Burn-Proof... So Iomega has sold both rebadged Sanyos and Plextors with Burn-Proof.

Well, I just got my five drives!
Does anyone (perhaps someone with inside information) yet know if the instant rebate is going to be limited by quantity?
By the way, my CompUSA also had a shelf three-deep full of these. When I told the young man helping me that I had some sort of psychic premonition that there might be an instant rebate on these drives, he asked me how I had heard about it. No one was supposed to know yet!
