Zonealarm not working

Hi all,

My free Zonealarm firewall and suite version would not allow me to connect to the web after windows xp update this evening.

Anyone else experience this. When I shut it down, it would connect fine.

Any recommendations for another good free firewall program.

What is wrong with the Windows Firewall or possibly the one on the router you are sitting behind?

Outbound protection isn't very good with Windows Firewall and the router has no outbound protection.

The culprit is KB951748. Uninstalling it will restore operation untill either ZA or MS come out with a solution.

Yup. That was posted on a few forums including the one at Zone Alarm
ZA is working on a patch ... they are not yet sure when it will be out.
Perhaps MS can fix the KB first.

The problem is a conflict between ZA and the latest Windoze security update, KB951748. Uninstall it, and everything works.

I was unable to get online, this morning. Phoned AT&T tech support who told me about the conflict. Notice on ZoneAlarm's site:

Workaround to Sudden Loss of Internet Access Problem

Date Published : 8 July 2008

Date Last Revised : 9 July 2008

Overview : Microsoft Update KB951748 is known to cause loss of internet access for ZoneAlarm users on Windows XP/2000. Windows Vista users are not affected.

Impact : Sudden loss of internet access

Platforms Affected : ZoneAlarm Free, ZoneAlarm Pro, ZoneAlarm AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware, and ZoneAlarm Security Suite

Recommended Actions -

Download and install the latest versions which solve the loss of internet access problem here:

• ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite
• ZoneAlarm Pro
• ZoneAlarm Antivirus
• ZoneAlarm Anti-Spyware
• ZoneAlarm Basic Firewall

- or follow the directions below.

Option 1: Move Internet Zone slider to Medium

1. Navigate to the "ZoneAlarm Firewall" panel
2. Click on the "Firewall" tab
3. Move the "Internet Zone" slider to medium

Option 2: Uninstall the hotfix

1. Click the "Start Menu"
2. Click "Control Panel", or click "Settings" then "Control Panel"
3. Click on "Add or Remove Programs"
4. On the top of the add/remove programs dialog box, you should see a checkbox that says "show updates". Select this checkbox
5. Scroll down until you see "Security update for Windows (KB951748)"
6. Click "Remove" to uninstall the hotfix

Personally, I've seen too many complaints with any ver. 7.x of ZA. Until now, I've stayed with ver. 6.5.737, which seems to work well. I'm now looking for the current best free firewall.

A new version of Zone Alarm is out that fixes this issue.

So snag it or try another free firewall.

I'm debating........I like how easy Zone Alarm is and don't want to have to config allot of crap.

Is others worth trying?

Also running a hardware firewall. So is the other free ones easy to setup?

What version of ZA were you running? The version on their site was the same as the one I had already downloaded but not installed, but when I compared the files, they were not the same.

As I posted, I still use ver. 6.5.737. There have been enough negative user reviews on ZA 7.xx that I've avoided it.

I just downloaded Comodo, which a quick search shows to be one of the preferred progs, now.

7 is bad? Really? The suite or the free firewall? I haven't had any problems. I'm always running the latest. Tweakguides.com said they posted an update and I downloaded it and all is well.

Comodo Pro firewall looks good I installed last Sunday after Norton Internet Security trial expired I was looking for light footprint like Comodo Pro and also I installed Avira Antivir both work together great but they are on my laptop ZoneAlarm Pro stay with my high octane performance rig
