Hot or not, this came in handy when I needed it: search on item #360281 at staples.com. At $49.97, it's slightly cheaper than even your better-known web vendors. Then, there's a link to a $10 rebate on that page (expires 9/30), and of course, with a $.26 bag of rubber bands (or equivalent) you can top the $50 mark--and that gets you free shipping and the opportunity to use a $20 coupon.

For $20, it sure beats buying a no-name modem.

You should re-edit your thread title, it's really not $20, you have to mention that $20 is after a $10 rebate.

If you want to get a really cheap modem, Microcenter has a Best Data 56k modem for $2.95 with an instant $7 rebate and a $20 mailin rebate.....cheap is good......

Not always. Usually software (win) modems will get you a lower connection speed than a hardware modem. THe ISA bus may be slow, but it's not as slow as phone lines, so it's not really that much of a bottleneck.

Dantzig, it's not for me, it's for my mother-in-law, and it's going into a low-end e-Machines PC just to access AOL. In this case, cheaper is better than better.

hmmmm.... I don't quite remember but I think you can just get a win modem from any B&M somewhere for cheaper than that! I got my Mach 2 for free, Rockwell chipset, had 2 but sold one to friend... I'm happy with the Mach 2 modem.(20 -20 rebate) I think they sold it somewhere for $10 reciently @ CompUSA, Staples err OM don't remember, and there was not rebate either! I even useed it to play UT!!! not bad at all... well, my home connection is a problem though... 24,600 is the best i can get, But as school I can get 48,000 I'm happy with the 32cent + tax item!

The Mach2 modem I got from Staples is suck. The thing had a PCtel chipset even though the box said rockwell. It will initially connect at 43k, but the respond time and actual transfer rates are much lower. It takes up so much of my resources that online gaming is just not possible. I had to return it even though it is free after rebate.

I will not get a winmodem unless it is has a lucent chipset. From what I hear LU wimmodem actually comes with a DSP. I just got the Andria Lucent modem from Overstock.com for $16 after the coupon you can find on the coupon sites. It is a lot better than any free modem from PCtel.
