I installed a Zoom modem in my system based on a Lucent chipset. The modem was OEM. When it dials up, it is unbearably loud. The modem volume setting in Control Panel does nothing. Can I send an extra command to the modem to disable sound? If not, can I do something else?

Is it goin through your speakers or modem itself? A lot of newer winmodems go through speakers and "fake" the modem sounds. So if you have 5000 watt Promedia 12.3's.... turn down da volume.

If it is ON the card, take a screwdriver and STAB out the speaker. Worked for mine. Don't blame me if it blows up for you tho.

go to control panel, phone and modem options, modem tab, double click your modem. go to advanced tab, for extra commands put the letter m. that should turn off the modem sound.

actually it is M0 (zero) that turns off speaker M1 (one) turns it back on. L0,L1,L2 (and sometimes L3) is supposed to change volume--0 low, 2 or 3 high.

I kind of like the "stab the speaker" suggestion. Truthfully, if it can't be fixed with a hammer, in my opinion, it is broken!!!!

Seriously dude. Why mess around in the control panel. Ever plan to sell a modem? Doubtful. Make it silenced. Stab the mofo.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'd stab it, but I may want to hear it sometime in the future, for some ungodly, unknown reason. I'll try the 'M0' tomorrow when I'm siting at my new system. Thanks.
