Announcing the new iPod Classic; it's like the old iPod Classic, but .03mm thinner and with 20GB more space.

Announcing the new iPod Nano; it's like the old iPod Nano, but we changed the shape slightly and added some colors.

Announcing the new iPod Shuffle; it's like the old iPod Shuffle, but we removed more buttons and added robo calls...I mean VoiceOver.

Yeah because the iPhone/iTouch were just incremental upgrades to the iPod line, and the Zune HD is *not* just a me too clone of the Touch with a bunch of shit nobody wants (HD radio, 720p out).

i'd like HD radio.

nice. how are the applications on the zune tho, do they even exist? not that I care... I'm more pushing for the palm pre app development, heh.

but good specs, they need to undercut apple, but not by too much. It's a tough road to fight the apple image. I have a feeling the next iphone/ipod touch/ipods will all have OLED as well.

You can count on that, I'm just wearing for the cliquish 'cool' factor of the Apple branding to wear off a bit. Both products are good in different areas, I happen to prefer the Zune though. Perhaps Itunes works better on the Mac platform, but on Windows it is pretty painful to me. To be fair the Zune software sucked before being repeatedly tweaked/updated/expanded.

If the Zune HD doesn't have all/most of that, it's pretty worthless.

I'm almost positive that MS wont take a step back from today's standards, otherwise the Zune HD will not be able to compete with Apple.

It was the preferred choice of my GF, and we both prefer it greatly to our Ipod experiences.

I believe that was sarcasm. I have an iPod touch and I absolutely hate it. Battery life is awful when using wi-fi, it runs way too slow for my needs and Apple are assholes when it comes to honoring their warranty.

Don't forget the fact that you have to jailbreak your Touch just to get it to do what you want. Why would I pay $300-$400 dollars for an media player that doesn't let me play my own media?

I also don't really care about apps, unless they are actually worthwhile. I have yet to find one that is appropriate. I highly doubt that MS will not have an "app" store since Blackberry/Nokia have already followed suit.

Not to mention the fact that the people who work at the Apple stores like to drop my iPod and then hand it back to me like nothing happened. Followed by them "casually mentioning" that they are "doing me a favor" by giving me a shitty refurb. This was after I was essentially called a liar when my cousin was sitting next to me and watched it happen right in front of us.

I wonder why I don't like Apple? Maybe because they think they are the second coming and their CS is horrible...hmmm

This won't compete with Apple, Apple won't lose any market share due the Zune HD. The market for it is people who already own a Zune and carry on and on about how their Zunes are infinitely better than an iPod. The rest of the world has iPods. I would be surprised if the Zune HD gains MS any market share at all. Too little, too late. HD on a device with 32 gigs? LOVELY. HD radio sucks, it's like better sounding FM without as many stations. The Zune HD is midly interesting specs wise, Apple has nothing to worry about though. And until the Zune HD has an app that allows me to stream my entire music collection anywhere I'm at, it's worthless to me, My city has free city wide wi-fi so anywhere I'm at I have access to 70,000 mp3s on my Touch.

It definitely will. I am not just talking about apps/music, but battery life (wi-fi), design, features and video output.

I also edited my post with an additional explanation of my experiences with Apple (this is also an important factor)

It definitely will? I somehow see MS wanting you to pay for Zune Pass if you want a big music collection on the go. If they allowed people to play their own music anywhere, it would seriously cut into the money they make from Zune Pass. Now, there might be a 3rd party app, but MS will have to allow it, as I see this being locked down tighter than the original Zune as far as being able to install anything on it or mod it in any way.

....or, you could access your Zune Pass downloads from anywhere. You act like Zune Pass is a poor value because you have "your own music" - with iTunes you pay a whole lot for that music. Unless you're a thief, which knowing you, you probably are.

The iPod has been losing market share steadily since it came out. They had more than 90% of the market at one point; they are at 70% now.

The original XBOX had a few unique features, but still got it's ass handed to it by the PS2. Five years later, the XBOX 360 has surpassed 30 million units sold, and has a comfortable lead over Sony. Give Microsoft a few more years (and Apple a few more years of releasing rehashed iPods) and the iPod's market share will drop another 20% or more.

Do you really think Microsoft is going to get beaten by a company that took three hardware/software iterations on their smart-phone to enable cut & paste?

Umm... You need to combine both Microsoft's XBox 360 sales AND Sony's PS3 sales to match the number of Nintendo Wii's sold, which is kinda sad considering that Microsoft had a one year head start before the Wii was released. Nintendo dominated both Sony and Microsoft with the Wii, because they made an easier to use product with mass market appeal. You know... kinda like what Apple did with the iPod.

Do you really think Microsoft is going to get beaten by a company that took three hardware/software iterations on their smart-phone to enable cut & paste?

I don't know... Most Apple fans would say that Microsoft has never made a better operating system than Mac OS, even though they're on their 7th major revision of Windows now

And does mass-market appeal automatically make it a better device?

The Wii has appeal, but it isn't my preferred system. Hell, I enjoyed the Wii while I still played it. It's been sitting idle while my PS3 has gotten a hell of a lot of playtime. Better devices don't always fare well if they don't do things just right to get that appeal.

Wii could have come out whenever. It was that family appeal, the appeal of easy to use, extreme simplicity, and a certain flair.
Apple has done exactly that with their products. The iPod basically just has the "ooo" to it, but when it comes to quality of the actual product, meh. It took until the iPhone, and then iTouch, to really change things. I admit, the App Store is a great thing.

The Zune is a better product. It wasn't at first, but I'd definitely argue the Zune 80/120 destroy the iPod Classic. How the ZuneHD will fare against the iTouch? Better features, but it may end up lacking the appeal of Apps. However, I don't need that appeal. I have my WinMo phone for doing everything I need. I just want a great MP3 player. Will likely hold onto my Zune 120 for the storage, but this will all depend on the price/storage of the Zune HD.

That's because with Apple you're dealing with a 'lifestyle' decision. You don't see people putting bumper stickers on their cars when they get a non-Apple product (or at least I haven't).
MS really needs to let the Zune function as an optional hd for the 360. That should push more sales where they can reap even greater profits over time than they do on the current 360 hds.

Let me guess... the Woot.com $79 Brown Zune special? That's when I got mine just to play with it. The software at the time was awful (it totally scrambled my playlists and screwed up my album artwork), but I used it for awhile before I got an iPhone.

Now it just collects dust, since I can keep all of my music and photos on my cell phone now. No need to carry a separate device anymore.

Actually, the woot.com $79 Black Zune special from a few weeks back. I picked up a couple of $9.99 car kits from sellout the same day. I have a 4Gb flash Zune that's off to MS for repair now- it stopped responding during sync. In a few minutes, I had a prepaid shipping label to send it back - I was impressed.

If it's priced right, I'm in for one. I usually just go for the ultra portable mp3 players for the gym - I currently use a Sansa Clip - but the Zune HD is sex.
