So I got my kickass brown Zune yesterday.

Pros:
- excellent interface, iPod's is dull, boring and hard to navigate compared to Zune's.
- in terms of sound quality, not as good as Creative's, but still one of the best
- easier to hold than iPod
- nice and large screen
- very quick charge
- already found 2 geeks like me on subway using wifi this morning
- better earbuds than iPod

Cons:
- software is not as smooth as iTunes, yet.
- screen should have more brightness levels
- doesn't have a format device function on the Zune itself, you have to do it via desktop software.

Overall, I love it. Already filled 13 gigs of it. And I love the brown color, its unique.

Oh, and thanks to blurredvision I paid $219 only That CC coupon worked perfect

I give it 3 months before some Sweedish or Norwegian hacker cracks the 3 day rule on songs downloaded by wifi

I never said it was the ONLY option. My problem is with the bullsh!t chart. They're comparing apples (no pun intended) to oranges and giving the impression that the pay per month model is the same as Apple's, but for only $14.99 per month. That's my problem with it. Very misleading.

It's a chart from some fan site...they spelled "unlimited downloads" wrong and listed "preloaded virus" as a category in the comparison chart. So if they're comparing apples and oranges, don't blame MS.

What did I blame MS for? I think they have a crappy service (per month downloads), but others may like it. The market will decide whether that "option" will still be available in the future. I'm not blaming MS for offering it. They can offer whatever they'd like. I'm just saying I think that model is worthless. But hey, that's my opinion. Some people may LOVE that service, however I don't know any that do.

.....

Yes it could, but for now it's not and Apple's iTunes is. So for today, I'm comparing DRM vs DRM free. Like I said, in the future this may change, but for now, it is what it is. So that is a HUGE plus for iTunes.

And did I mention the Zune is ugly?

Wow man wow... you are either an ultimate Apple fanboi or a MS hater. This thread turned into "da funnay!"

Beautiful .

I've been using my Zune over the past few hours here at work, and plan on writing up a mini amatuer review for you guys, comparing it to the Nano, Vision:M, and regular video iPod. Unbiased here, as I have no reason to lean towards a particular brand, so look for it if you're interested.

I just read that microsoft will be releasing firmware (at an unspecified date) that will allow sharing of videos and other files. I think this Zune thing is going to really kick off. BTW... back to the original question that I posed in this post. Ive decided im not going to get my gf an mp3 player for her birthday. I got her a necklace instead. But I think ill get her the Zune for Hanukkah/Christmas

No offense forfor, but I hope you aren't actually listening to your ipod or zune using the stock earbuds. Neither even compare to a $40 IEM set. I never understood reviews and comparisons of mp3 players where they use the stock earbuds to assess sound quality. That's like determining how good a home theater speaker is by going into the next room and putting a cup against the wall.

As long as you have a constant (one pair of stock earbuds) and a variable (the different players), then you can compare anything. With that said, your analogy sucks hard.

You can bash iPods all you like, but they have a place. That place is where the Zune wants to be, but in this incarnation it will never get there.

Same thing was once said about American cars, IBM computers, etc.

I bolded the important part of my post. Please re-read and digest.

No, that is totally incorrect. A bad pair of earbuds will not yield any useful information about sound quality of an mp3 player. All it will tell you is how it would sound on stock earbuds. Granted, many people are probably dumb enough to use stock earbuds, but they shouldn't be claiming anything about sound quality of the mp3 device if they do. Even if one player sounds better on the same bad earbuds, that is not in any way an indication of how it would sound on great earbuds with an amp. In fact, on bad earbuds I imagine the "best sounding" device is actually boosting frequencies that low quality buds typically are weak in, thus making it a rather inaccurate sound.

To 95% of the general populace out there, stock earbuds are more than sufficient, and hardly can be considered "bad", as you so succinctly put it. Only the other 5% are hardcore music listeners, and can actually distinguish a plausible difference between stock earbuds and a $50+ set purchased seperately.

Oh well, I'm not here to argue.....I just don't feel like it. I think reviewers are fine using stock earbuds to gage sound quality for the normal folk, you think it's pointless. We'll agree to disagree.

I never thought I'd say this but the Zune could actually use a little more flair. It's just way too plain for me.

1) Some chart a fan site made.
2) Nobody has broken their DRM yet so that you can illegally remove it.

Oh yeah, and you think it's ugly. I do to...well, I like the rubberized coating, but not the nav button and screen/button border. It does look better in person though.
Well to me be a little more clear for you.
1) I had an issue was with a fan site, not nesseccarily with the Zune, just sighting some bullsh!t.
2) When I buy music, I want no strings attached, period. Call it what you will. If you enjoy limitations in the form of DRM, knock yourself out. A Zune should be right up your alley.

And yes, I think the Zune looks ugly.

I'll take your other points but calling the iPod hard to navigate is a bit of a stretch.... The stupidly simple navigation is what made the ipod so popular.

I can all but guarantee you more than 5% of people notice the difference. Whether they actually care enough to buy different earbuds is a different story. It's ok to describe how the sound is with the stock earbuds but it should not be labelled as any sort of valid assessment of the sound quality of the device. If I see that in a review I immediately stop reading because i know that the review isn't remotely thorough or competent.

Right. I find that stupid people often call more intelligent people stupid because they can't comprehend what they're saying. This would be a perfect example.
