There's pretty much one thing holding me back from buying a Zune, and that's the software. I downloaded the software to try it out, and it's messing with my metadata. Specifically, it's stripping some (not all) of my mp3s of their embedded album art. I have "automatically update album art and metadata" unchecked, so you'd think nothing would happen.

I've also read that when you move songs from your computer to your Zune, it resizes the album art (the folder.jpg file I guess) to 200x200 and low quality at that. Does this rewrite the folder.jpg on your computer, or does it just create that 200x200 file on the Zune only? (Yes I have both embedded and folder.jpg; I'm reorganizing my mp3 collection =P). Also, the software doesn't seem to recognize my folder.jpgs for the mp3s that it stripped the embedded art from.

This is very frustrating; has anyone else had this problem?

I've found that the software doesn't mess with the album art if it is in the tags. It does not use folder.jpg. If you load up the software and you don't see album art (again, if it's in the tags), it just didn't detect it right, but it doesn't remove anything. If it cannot find the art or it has some issue, you can manually put the art there and it will make its own jpg file in the directory called ZuneArt{434343443} or something like that with a bunch of numbers after it. The folder.jpg is not even used.

sorry, I should add that I checked with mp3tag (which I originally used to embed the art) and the embedded album art was no longer there, so it definitely did remove it. I just checked an album's folder with mp3tag, album art was all embedded fine, added that album folder to the Zune player, and then no more embedded album art. The Zune software also apparently decided the album's name was too long, so it chopped off the last several characters. I can't image I'm the only one this has happened to? It doesn't make any sense at all

Hmm, I dunno then. It definitely does not remove it for me, and I don't see how it's removing it for you when all it's doing is reading the files/directories you give it.

That doesn't sound right. I've never had the Zune software mess with my tags unless I told it to alter the tags.

I used MediaMonkey to edit all the tags and add album art in my Mp3 collection and the zune software has never made any changes to any of it.

As much as I hate the Zune software for syncing purposes, it never messed with my tags. ¿Something with your install perhaps?
