So... do you call a tech-stock bubble/crash during or well after it happens?

If you are talking to me I've known the whole time. Pandora next? Groupon? Netflix? All shit companies lol. Netflix has so much competition now from amazon, microsoft, walmart, redbox, etc. in movies.

FB is a dead cat bounce but a good bounce. Soros timed it well.

It was a general question, but you may answer.

Facebook is down almost 50% from starting price, Zynga "down", Groupon caved, and I'm missing a few others. When does one call it...

yea, it's always great watching companies struggle, especially when the rest of the economy is doing so fantastic.

They're selling a product like anyone else, and they did it better than anyone else, original ideas or not. The fact that some people in this thread don't get that leads me to question if anyone actually works in a field remotely related to that sector.

I'm not sure if getting an artificial overvaluation on the stock market qualifies as "selling a product better than anyone else." Unless the product you're talking about is the company itself, not the things that it makes. I'm going to break from the Wall Street mentality and put forth that a company's long-term contribution to the economy is NOT directly related to its share price.

apple is down a shit ton as well

I don't put them in the same class as Facebook, Groupon, and Zynga. Apple has a real brand, a rather large selection of successful products, a loyal following, and stupidly large revenues + profits.

I was going to add RIM to my original post, but again, slightly different class.

None of those are real competition for Netflix. They are streaming only. If you prefer quality, Netflix is the only one that mails blu-rays.

If an idea for a website were presented to a company like Zynga as something to buy, is there a way to protect it from them just liking and taking it when they hear it?

Not sure what sort of legal NDA type form would protect that or if it'd be effective if someone violated it.

Anyone have info on this question?

I don't think it works that way. You don't shop an idea for a site around. You start a site, and hope you get bought. Graphics can be trademarked and copyrighted, and processes can be patented(which is bullshit with regards to software), but an idea can be used by anyone. Take a good idea to Zuckerberg, and you'll lose it without recourse.

Netflix, totally forgot about that one!

The problem with Netflix is the same problem Amazon and Hulu will have - studios that don't want to play nice. Either Netflix will eventually succeed, or the studios will eliminate them by undercutting with direct downloading and then jack up the prices once we're all addicted. It's gonna suck.

They're also known for treating employees like shit including rampant sexism. It's like a 1st world sweat shop there--go in, get paid well for a few years (as well as any other SF software company), come out hating your life.

I was recently searching for jobs in SF: the one piece of advice I got unanimously was "Don't work for Zynga." Nobody I talked to (including Zynga employees) had anything good to say.

Not that I would have anyway. Their "product" is horrifyingly stupid and only serves to set the gaming industry backwards by focusing energy away from innovation & self-improvement. But yes, you are right: they had their technique down to a science. They were/are the best at creating that special kind of "game." I can't wait to see it end.

From what I've seen, Netflix is "stealing" money from a bunch of companies' traditional revenue streams. TV networks and cable companies appear to be alreadying undercutting them through streaming and higher quality on-demand channels. We already have bandwidth caps for internet (owned by cable TV companies) in Canada and small companies offering unlimited are slowly introducing caps.

Exactly, which is what I want to prevent. Seems to me this fits a partner to make.

A strange question to ask here; I'm sure many on the forums work in the software and/or gaming and/or IT sector.

That one really is so insane it's beyond insane.

Groupon is a far bigger joke than ZYNGA, regardless of what its stock has done.

I know Apple is down but the company has proven itself and even if its stock has come down it's still an absolute cash machine.

I probably like Netflix more not because i think they are immune to destruction but because I actually use the product. And for better or worse they've helped change the industry, they've been a major player. Most people don't know what ZYNGA is even if their damn aunt has tried to get them to play farmville.
